An Essential Guide to Lead Flashing and Patination Oil
Lead has been the gold standard for weatherproofing UK roofs for centuries, but achieving a professional, long-lasting finish requires more than just good fitting. Whether you are working on a chimney stack, a bay window, or a flat roof, choosing the correct code of lead and applying patination oil correctly is essential.
Choosing the Right Lead Code
Lead is measured in 'codes' based on its thickness and weight. For most domestic roofing projects, Code 4 is the industry standard for flashings, as it offers the perfect balance between flexibility and durability. If you are working on larger areas like flat roofs or gutters, you may require the heavier Code 5 or 6 to prevent 'creeping' or thermal cracking. Always ensure your lead is fitted in lengths no longer than 1.5 metres to allow for natural expansion and contraction.
Code 3 - 1.32mm - Soakers (lightweight)
Code 4 - 1.80mm - Vertical Flashings, Chimneys, Hip & Ridge
Code 5 - 2.24mm - Flat Roofs, Valley Gutters
Code 6 - 2.65mm - Large Flat Roofs, Box Gutters
What is Patination Oil and Why is it Essential?
When new lead is exposed to the elements, it undergoes a natural oxidation process that can result in unsightly white carbonate streaks running down your brickwork or tiles. Patination oil is a specially formulated coating that prevents this. By applying a thin layer immediately after installation, you provide a protective barrier that allows the lead to age into its classic, uniform dull grey colour without staining the surrounding masonry.
How to Apply Patination Oil for a Perfect Finish
For the best results, follow these three professional tips:
- Apply Immediately: Apply the oil as soon as the lead is fitted, ideally on the same day, before any rain or dew can start the oxidation process.
- Clean and Dry: Ensure the lead surface is completely dry and free from dust or mortar spills.
- Use a Lint-Free Cloth: Apply the oil in straight, vertical strokes using a soft, lint-free cloth. You only need a thin, even coat, avoiding "pooling" will ensure a streak-free finish that protects your lead for years to come.
