Essential Application and Prep Guide
To get a flawless, professional finish, a little preparation goes a long way:
1. Surface Prep: Ensure all surfaces are completely clean, dry, and free from loose debris or decay. If you are dealing with active mould, lichen, or green algae, wash the area down with Bird Brand Algae Killing Fungicidal Wash and let it dry before painting.
2. Untreated Wood & Metal:
- Bare Wood: Pre-treat bare or untreated timbers with Bird Brand Superior Clear Wood Preserver first to guard against rot and decay.
- Rusting Metal: Rub down the area and apply a coat of Bird Brand Red Oxide Primer or Grey Spray Primer before painting.
- Slicker Materials: For PVC, plastics, or masonry, lightly rub down the surface to create a "key" so the paint adheres perfectly.
3. Application Window: Only apply when the temperature is above 10°C and no rain or frost is forecast. If the timber or masonry surface is exceptionally dry, you can dilute your first coat with 10% water to help it glide on smoothly.
4. Coverage and Curing:
- On timber, expect a coverage of 8–10m sq per litre.
- On smoother, non-porous surfaces like metal or plastic, a single litre stretches further, covering 12–14m.
- Allow a minimum of 2 hours between your first and second coat. You can apply it easily using a high quality synthetic brush, a dense foam roller, or an HVLP sprayer.
