UPVC Guttering and Downpipe
When it comes to protecting your home from the unpredictable British weather, few things are as vital as a high performing rainwater system. Blocked, leaking, or sagging gutters can quickly lead to expensive damp problems, ruined brickwork, and foundation issues.
If you are looking to replace or install a new system, UPVC guttering and downpipes are the gold standard for modern residential properties. Lightweight, incredibly long-lasting, and virtually maintenance free, they are engineered to handle everything the UK climate can throw at them.
Whether you are a DIY enthusiast planning your first installation or a professional installer looking for a reliable setup, knowing your components is key to a flawless project. Here is your ultimate guide to residential guttering systems.
Why Choose UPVC Guttering?
Modern Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC) has completely revolutionised the building industry. Here is why it's the ideal choice for any property:
- Built for the British Weather: UPVC is entirely waterproof, rust-proof, and corrosion-resistant. It easily withstands freezing winter temperatures, heavy downpours, and intense summer UV exposure without cracking, fading, or degrading.
- Lightweight yet Robust: Unlike heavy, traditional cast iron, UPVC is incredibly light. This makes it much safer and faster to handle on ladders and scaffolding, reducing structural strain on your roof's fascia boards.
- Easy to Install: With simple clip-together joints, integrated rubber lubrication seals, and components that can be easily cut to size with a standard fine tooth handsaw or hacksaw, installing a UPVC system is fast and efficient.
-
Aesthetics to Match Your Home: Our UPVC guttering is available in four distinct, durable colours to perfectly match your fascia boards, window frames, and architectural style:
- White: Crisp, classic, and perfect for traditional or modern rendered properties.
- Black: A timeless traditional look that suits most types of properties.
- Brown: Warm and ideal for rustic brickwork or properties with timber styling.
- Anthracite Grey: The contemporary architectural favourite, matching modern dark grey window profiles.
- Cast Iron Effect: A black guttering system that offers the modern appearance of traditional cast iron without the downsides.

Anatomy of a Guttering System: The Pieces You Need
To successfully route rainwater away from your roof, you need more than just straight lengths of pipe. A complete installation requires a specific network of fittings to navigate corners, join sections, and drop water safely to ground drainage.
Here is the checklist of components required for a complete setup:
The Roofline Components (Horizontal System)
- Guttering (Gutter Lengths): The main horizontal troughs that clip into your brackets along the fascia board. Available in standard 4m and 5m lengths, these collect the rainwater as it runs off your roof and channel it toward the running outlets.
- Gutter Brackets (Fascia Brackets): These are fixed directly to your fascia boards to support the horizontal gutter lengths. To prevent sagging under heavy rain or snow loads, they should be spaced at a maximum of every 600mm (24in).
- Union Brackets (Gutter Unions): Used to join two straight lengths of gutter together seamlessly. They feature integrated rubber gaskets that create a watertight seal when clipped into place, while allowing the gutter to expand and contract naturally.
- Gutter Angles: Essential for navigating the corners of your home. They are available in 90° and 135° variations for standard square corners or bay window configurations.
- Running Outlets: The critical bridge between the horizontal gutter and the vertical downpipe. The gutter clips into either side, and a central opening directs the collected rainwater downward.
- Stop Ends: Caps used to securely close off the open end of a gutter run, preventing water from spilling over the sides of your property. These are available as external caps that clip onto the raw end of a gutter, or as dedicated stop-end outlets.
The Vertical Components (Downpipe System)
- Downpipes (Rainwater Pipes): The vertical lengths of circular or square pipe that connect directly to your running outlets. They run down the side of your property to safely transport the collected rainwater away from the roofline and down into your ground drainage or soakaway.
- Downpipe Brackets (Clips): These wrap around your vertical downpipes and screw securely into the masonry or timber, keeping the downpipe rigid, safe, and perfectly plumb against the wall.
- Offset Bends: Typically used in pairs at the top of the system to create what the trade calls a "swan neck". This safely guides the downpipe from the overhang of the roofline back flush against the house wall.
- Downpipe Branches: A specific Y-shaped connector used when you need to merge two separate downpipe runs into a single pipe line.
- Hoppers: Decorative and highly functional collectors placed at the top of a downpipe. They are ideal for gathering high volumes of water from low-level roof valleys, flat roofs, or greywater waste pipes.
- Downpipe Shoes: Fitted right at the very bottom of the downpipe run. The curved profile safely directs water away from the base of the house and straight over a gully, grid, or drainage system.

Choosing Your Style: The 3 Main Residential Gutter Profiles
Before you start ordering your brackets and outlets, you need to select the physical shape, or profile, of your guttering system. Residential UPVC guttering is primarily manufactured in three standard designs. Each offers a different aesthetic look and rainwater capacity.
1. Half-Round Guttering
- The Look: A classic, timeless profile that forms a perfect semi-circle
- The Best Fit: This is the traditional standard for British homes. It is incredibly versatile and looks right at home on everything from Edwardian terraces to standard modern semi-detached properties.
- The Features: Because of its smooth, curved base, water flows quickly and naturally toward the outlets. It has fewer ridges and corners inside, meaning there are fewer places for leaves, twigs, and moss to get trapped, making it the easiest profile to keep clean.
2. Square-Line Guttering
- The Look: A contemporary, box-shaped design with crisp, clean angles.
- The Best Fit: Ideal for modern builds, new-build extensions, and properties with angular architectural features. It pairs beautifully with modern, sharp edged UPVC fascia boards.
- The Features: Don't let the similar width fool you, because of its boxy shape, square guttering actually holds a slightly higher volume of water than standard half-round profiles. It is a fantastic choice if your roof faces heavy downpours but you don't want to step up to a bulky commercial size.
3. Ogee Guttering (Niagara Ogee / Decorative)
- The Look: A premium, stylised profile featuring a decorative, wave-like moulded front edge. It takes its inspiration from traditional 19th century cast iron and timber gutter detailing.
- The Best Fit: Perfect for traditional properties, character cottages, or homeowners looking to add a high-end, decorative feature to their roofline.
- The Features: Ogee guttering is a "best of both worlds" option. It hides its immense water capacity behind an elegant facade. The deep, sculpted profile can handle a significantly higher flow rate than both half-round and square-line systems, making it ideal for large roofs or properties in areas prone to sudden, severe storms.
Need More Capacity? Commercial High Capacity Options
While standard residential profiles (like Half-Round, Square-Line or Ogee) are perfect for houses and bungalows, larger properties or commercial buildings require a much higher volume of water management.
If you are working on a commercial unit, a massive agricultural building, or a residential property with a vast roof surface area, you will want to look at High Capacity Big 6 or Deepflow Guttering systems.
Featuring a much deeper, higher capacity profile, these commercial grade systems are explicitly engineered to collect and process massive volumes of water rapidly. This ensures that even during severe, torrential British downpours, water is moved away efficiently without overflowing or overwhelming the property's perimeter drainage.
